The conference
The Rock of Cashel dominates the landscape of the Golden Vale. A great limestone outcrop, it supports one of Ireland's most spectacular and important historical sites: a medieval ecclesiastical complex dedicated to God, St Patrick and St Ailbhe. For centuries the seat of the kings of Munster, the Rock was granted to the Church in 1101 by the reigning king, Muirchertach Ó Briain. Our conference commemorates that event and explores the age of reform and renewal that began at the Synod of Cashel in 1101. The conference takes place in University College Cork and Cashel from Friday 12 October to Sunday 14 October 2001. Lectures in Cork will examine the cultural and political situation of twelfth century Ireland in a wider European context. Events at Cashel will give participants an opportunity to examine closely the Rock's artistic and architectural heritage at first hand: the twelfth century Hiberno-Romanesque Cormac's Chapel; the thirteenth century Cathedral, sacked by Cromwellian forces in 1647; the Hall of the Vicars' Choral, the Round Tower and St Patrick's Cross. On Sunday evening, the monks of Glenstal will close the conference by singing Vespers.
